§ 37. Mr. Fryasked the Secretary of State for Transport how the figure of £1.5 million, given in the Official Report, 29th November 1976, column 50, as the estimated monthly financial saving of the fuel economy speed limits was arrived at.
§ Mr. William RodgersSince the limits were introduced, petrol consumption has dropped by between 3 and 4 per cent. more than can be accounted for by the fall in traffic, and reduced speeds appear likely to account for no more than one-third of this saving. The estimated monthly saving of £1.25 million is based on a reduction of 1 per cent. in the petrol import bill of £1,500 million a year.
