HC Deb 14 December 1976 vol 922 cc685-6W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection if he will publish a table showing the preentry cost of meat and tinned goods from Commonwealth countries and the post-entry cost that is imposed in order to meet United Kingdom obligations to the EEC.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

I have been asked to reply.

It is assumed that the hon. Member is asking about the value of imports and of import duties and levies.

The value of imports of meat, including tinned meat, from Commonwealth countries in the nine months ending September 1976 was £177.3 million, c.i.f. Protective duties and agricultural levies charged on these imports were £21.6 million. If import duties had been charged at the rates applying in 1972 they would have amounted to £3.5 million.

I regret that information about imports of tinned goods is not readily available.
