Mr. Giles Shaw

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is his estimate of the amount of social security payments which have been fraudulently claimed in 1975 and 1976.

Mr. Orme

No such estimate is possible. The amount of fraud which is undetected cannot be known.

Sir Bernard Braine

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many cases of fraud and abuse of the social security system were detected by his Department during the first six months of 1976.

Mr. Orme

My Department and the Department of Employment detected approximately 28,000 cases of fraud of social security benefits in the first six months of 1976.
