HC Deb 01 December 1976 vol 921 cc185-6W
Mrs. Wise

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what consultations are being or have been conducted with regard to the position of universities in respect of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act, with which bodies and with what results.

Mr. John Grant

I am informed by the Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission that there have been a series of meetings with representatives of the universities and university staff over the last 12 months including the Association of Scientific, Technical and Managerial Staffs, the Association of University Teachers, the Association for Science Education, the Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals, and other bodies. These meetings include informal discussion at local level in the field by out-stationed representatives of the Executive, discussion at national level with officials, and a recent meeting with representatives of ASTMS with the Chairman of the Commission. The Commission has directed the Executive to study the implications of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act for universities and this study is in progress.
