HC Deb 06 August 1976 vol 916 cc1066-7W
Mr. Grocott

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is satisfied that the information given to the hon. Member for Lichfield and Tamworth on Friday 16th July, indicating that 75 per cent. of people classified as self-employed have a chargeable income of less than £3,000 per annum, accurately refects the earnings of the self-employed; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Denzil Davies

That information reflects the profits from self-employment returned for tax purposes as arising in accounting periods ending in 1972–73 when income levels in general were much lower than now; it also includes part-time occupation. I fully recognise however the need to ensure that all income is returned for tax purposes.
