Mr. Michael McNair-Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the average length of prison sentence served by those sentenced to life imprisonment in the Province within the past 25 years.

Only six out of 143 persons sentenced to life imprisonment in Northern Ireland in the past 25 years have been released on licence, none of whom was convicted of crimes connected with the present troubles. Of these six the average length of time served was eight years and seven months.
