HC Deb 03 August 1976 vol 916 cc660-1W
28 Mr. Richard Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the likely effect of reductions in local education authority expenditure on pupil-teacher ratios in schools; and if he will make a statement.

Miss Margaret Jackson

Local authorities have been asked to review their budgets so as to ensure that their expenditure in aggregate does not exceed what was implicit in the rate support grant settlement for 1976–77. Our present information is that authorities generally intend to maintain next school year the pupil-teacher ratios attained in 1975–76.
