HC Deb 03 August 1976 vol 916 c663W
34. Mrs. Chalker

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what proportion of pupils in the United Kingdom have sat for two or more A-levels in summer 1976.

Miss Margaret Jackson

This information is not available for 1976 yet, but I expect the number of pupils from schools in England and Wales who attempted two or more A levels this summer to be between 16 and 17 per cent. of the population aged 18. Corresponding figures for the rest of the United Kingdom are the responsibility of my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Scotland and for Northern Ireland.

36. Mr. Kimball

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he has any plans to abolish the GCE A-level.

Mr. Gerry Fowler

No. The Schools Council is considering proposals for the reform of the sixth form curriculum and examinations but has not yet made recommendations on this subject to my right hon. Friend.
