HC Deb 14 April 1976 vol 909 cc546-7W
Mr. Storehouse

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many grammar schools have decided to become independent rather than comprehensive.

Mr. Mulley

Since 1st March 1974 statutory approval has been given to proposals by local education authorities to cease to maintain two voluntary grammar schools in circumstances where it appears to be the intention of the voluntary body concerned to re-establish the school as an independent school. One hundred and nineteen direct grant grammar schools have decided not to opt for entry to the maintained system as comprehensive schools; their future is a matter for their proprietors to decide.
