HC Deb 12 April 1976 vol 909 c382W
Mr. Jessel

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what estimate he has made of the effect of the declining birth rate on the number of teachers required in the 1980s and on the need for school building.

Miss Margaret Jackson

The Advisory Committee on the Supply and Training of Teachers is considering the size of the teacher force which should be planned for the maintained primary and secondary schools during the 1980s in the light of the impending decline in the number of pupils. It aims to tender advice to my right hon. Friend towards the end of this year. Declining expenditure on school building is reflected in the capital expenditure forecasts for schools in the recent White Paper "Public Expenditure to 1979–80" (Cmnd 6393).
