asked the Secretary of State for Employment what proportion of the population of the United Kingdom in each year since 1946. expressed in terms of per 1,000 population, was engaged in manufacturing industry (private sector), manufacturing industry (public sector), service industry (private sector), service industry (public sector), Civil Service (central Government) (non-industrial), and local government (non-industrial).

The available information is shown in the table below. Estimates on a consistent basis are not available for years prior to 1959. The estimates for the Civil Service and Local Government relate to minimum list headings 901 (Excluding Her Majesty's Forces) and 906 of the Standard Industrial Classification and will include some industrial workers.
