HC Deb 02 April 1976 vol 908 cc589-90W
Mr. Greville Janner

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will institute an inquiry as to whether the use of only hand and thumb pressure for testing rust is the best method for assessing corrosion without causing unnecessary damage to the vehicle.

Dr. Gilbert

No. The advice of the Department's vehicle engineers, which is based on long and wide-ranging experience, is that the method advocated is the best for determining the extent of corrosion without causing unnecessary damage to the vehicle.

Mr. Greville Janner

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what evidence he has that unnecessary damage to vehicles has been caused by the use of methods other than only hand and thumb pressure for testing rust when assessing corrosion.

Dr. Gilbert

Evidence gained over many years on the Department's vehicles which are submitted to garages for the purpose of conducting incognito checks on garages' standards, as well as from the experience of the Department's vehicle examiners who see the condition of vehicles when they are called in to adjudicate on an appeal by a member of the public.
