HC Deb 02 April 1976 vol 908 c590W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how much has been spent on advertising the slogan "Dip Your Headlights".

Mr. Marks

Nothing has been spent on advertising the specific slogan "Dip Your Headlights". In 1973 there was a campaign using posters and bus backs advising drivers to use dipped headlights on gloomy days. The cost for this was £29,500. A very short television film emphasising the need for drivers to dip their headlights to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic was also produced in 1973 at an approximate cost of £450 and, to date, has been shown on 400 occasions in public service free time periods allocated by the television authorities. More recent advertising, connected with the requirement to use headlights in poor visibility, has not specifically advocated that headlights should be dipped.
