HC Deb 29 October 1975 vol 898 c494W
Mr. Lee

asked the Attorney-General how many references to date have been made from courts of the United Kingdom to the courts of the Community since Great Britain joined the Common Market; in how many instances have decisions of the United Kingdom been reversed in whole or in part; and in how many instances have such references left the United Kingdom law unaltered.

The Solicitor-General

United Kingdom courts have so far made two references to the European Court, which has given a preliminary ruling on one of them. A reference is not an appeal and a decision of a national court cannot be reversed by the European Court. References can be made only in cases concerning Community law and rulings cannot alter the law of any part of the United Kingdom.
