§ Dr. SummerskillOn 30th September the total prison population in England and Wales was 40,201, of whom 25,918 were serving prison sentences, 7,815 had been sentenced to borstal training or to 9W detention in a detention centre, 3,760 were on remand awaiting trial and 2,180 were on remand, convicted and awaiting sentence. Responsibility for offenders elsewhere in the United Kingdom rests with my right hon. Friends the Secretaries of State for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

§ Dr. SummerskillOn 30th September, 1,051 persons were held at Her Majesty's Prison, Pentonville; 102 were on remand to await trial, and 87 had been convicted and remanded to await sentence.
§ Mr. Macfarlaneasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many convicted murderers have been released since September 1965 having served (a) less than five years in prison and (b) less than 10 years in prison.
§ Mr. Alexander W. LyonOf the 255 murderers who were released on licence from prisons in England and Wales between 1st October 1965 and 30th September 1975, 168 were detained for less than 10 years and of these six were detained for less than five years.
