§ Mr. Hooleyasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will now report to the House the progress of discussions with representatives of the Governments of Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand, concerning the independence of Ocean Island and the future of the Banaban people.
§ Mr. RowlandsDuring my visit to the Pacific in September I had exploratory talks with those concerned, including the Governments of Fiji, the Gilberts, Australia and New Zealand. The talks, which were confidential, took place in an atmosphere of cordiality and understanding, and I hope they will help in our efforts to resolve the Banaban problems. We are now considering what steps can be taken in the light of my discussions.
