HC Deb 16 October 1975 vol 897 c767W
Mr. Hannam

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many times each joint consultative committee in

MALES IN ENGLANDAND WALES(PERCENTAGES)
1931 1951 1961 1971
Social Class I (Professional etc.) 2.4 3.3 3.8 5.0
Social Class II (Intermediate) 13.2 14.5 15.2 18.2
Social Class III(Skilled) 48.7 52.9 51.0 50.4

Social Class V (Unskilled) 17.5 13.1 9.2 8.4

The social classes are defined mainly by reference to occupation. The definitions were revised in 1951 and again in 1961 to keep them up to date.

No information is available for females before 1951. There was no census in 1941. I will write to my hon. Friend later about the earlier censuses.
