HC Deb 13 October 1975 vol 897 cc596-7W
Mr. Anthony Grant

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, how many civil servants in his Department are paid more than the various Ministers within it.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

One United Kingdom civil servant is paid more than the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, who receives £16,000 per annum (£13,000 departmental salary, £3,000 parliamentary allowance). Seven United Kingdom civil servants and 65 Northern Ireland civil servants are paid more than the Ministers of State, who receive £11,200 (£7,500 departmental salary, £3,700 parliamentary allowance).

Fourteen United Kingdom civil servants and 330 Northern Ireland civil servants are on salary scales with maximum points higher than the £9,200 (£5,500 departmental salary, £3,700 parliamentary allowance) paid to the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, the hon. Member for Mansfield (Mr. Concannon). Thirty-five United Kingdom civil servants and 2,090 Northern Ireland civil servants are on salary scales with maximum points higher than the £5,840 (£5,500 departmental salary, £340 London allowance) paid to the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Lord Donaldson.

It is not possible, without disproportionate cost, to state exactly how many United Kingdom civil servants are presently paid more than the hon. Member for Mansfield and Lord Donaldson.
