asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the total number of officers in the schools inspectorate; and if this is above or below the establishment.

The total number of Her Majesty's Inspectors of Schools in England and Wales on 24th November 1975 was 477, of whom 47 were on loan to the Welsh Office. This was below the approved complement.

Responsibility for Her Majesty's Inspectors of Schools in Scotland rests with my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland.
