HC Deb 12 November 1975 vol 899 cc852-3W
Mr. Tugendhat

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many consular offices are maintained by Her Majesty's Government staffed by members of the Diplomatic Service; and how this figure compares with 1960 and 1970.

Mr. Rowlands

There are currently 79 consular posts staffed by members of Her Majesty's Diplomatic Service. This figure excludes the Consular sections of diplomatic missions but includes 12 posts in Australia and Canada now designated as Consulates or Consulates-General, which in 1970 were known as offices of the High Commission. In 1970,78 career consular posts were maintained, as well as 13 corresponding posts in Australia and Canada. Figures for 1960 are not readily available as the unified Diplomatic Service was not formed until 1965.

Mr. Tugendhat

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in which cities, and when, new consular offices have been opened since 1970; and in which cities, and when, such offices have been closed down.
