HC Deb 30 June 1975 vol 894 c344W
Mr. Corbett

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what are the current estimates of the number of passengers expected to use Luton Airport in 1973 1976, 1980 and 1985.

Mr. Clinton Davis

Forecasts of air traffic in the London area as a whole, but not for individual airports, are being prepared as part of the further consideration of airport developments following the abandonment of the Maplin airport project. I understand that the Luton Airport Authority expects about 2 million passengers to use the airport in 1975.

Mr. Corbett

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what discussions have been held with Luton Borough Council concerning a possible increase in the air traffic at Luton Airport to allow the handling of 5 million passengers a year by the mid-1980s.

Mr. Clinton Davis

Following the abandonment of the Maplin airport project, preliminary consultations have been held with the owners of airports including Luton, and with local authorities and other organisations concerned with airport developments. These discussions will be taken into account in the further consultations which I hope shortly to announce.
