asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether he has any plans to purchase the United States Boeing AWACS aircraft for the RAF.

The final choice of system to meet our requirement for airborne early warning will not be made for some time. Meanwhile we are taking an active part in the NATO study of the Boeing AWACS aircraft, but are also continuing with our national studies of the alternative AEW aircraft based on Nimrod.
