My right hon. Friend had a useful discussion of the situation in Namibia. Mr. Nujoma expressed appreciation for the change of policy announced on 4th December, and for the educational assistance being given to SWAPO. My right hon. Friend stated our reasons for the recent veto in the Security Council.

Mr. Townsend

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if it is his intention to send observers to all future political trials in Namibia; and if this has been done in the past.

Mr. Rowlands

Members of the staff of the British ambassador in South Africa have attended a number of such trials in the past, and will continue to do so, where possible and appropriate, in the future.
