HC Deb 18 July 1975 vol 895 cc620-1W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the average number of adult students who registered for vacation employment in each year since 1949.

Mr. John Fraser

Figures are available, since July 1971, for the number of adult students registered for vacation work, who are unemployed at the monthly count date, but not for the total number of students who register at least once in the course of a year. The numbers of adult students unemployed in Great Britain at count dates from July 1971 to June 1975 are:

down by the Health and Safety at Work Act etc., 1974.

Mr. Harold Walker

The Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission informs me that this information is not available.

The hon. Member will know that until regulations are made under Sections 2(4) and (5) there is no statutory requirement for the appointment or election of safety representatives from among employees. He will also be aware of the Government's intention to repeal Section 2(5) of the Health and Safety Act through the Employment Protection Bill. The initiative for requesting the establishment of joint safety committees under Section 2(7) will rest with such safety representatives.
