Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many civil servants are employed in his Department; what is the total cost of running that Department for the latest year for which figures are available; and if he will itemise the main constituent costs.

Mr. Mulley

2,908 non-industrial civil servants and one industrial civil servant were employed in the Department of Education and Science at 1st April 1975.

The estimates of staff salaries, etc., for 1975–76 published in the Supply Estimates 1975–76 total £12,509,500, net of Appropriations in Aid, made up as follows:

Salaries and wages 11,991,000
Travelling and subsistence 620,000
Other general expenses 958,500
Less Appropriation in Aid 1,060,000
Net Estimates cost for 1975–76 12,509,500
