Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for Industry how many civil servants are employed in his Department; what is the total cost of running the Department for the latest year for which figures are available; and if he will itemise the main constituent costs.

10,365 non-industrial and industrial civil servants were employed on 1st April 1975.

The estimates of staff salaries, ect., for 1975–76 published in the Supply Estimates 1975–76 total £34,634,000 net of appropriations in aid, made up as follows:

Salaries and wages 35,528,000
Travelling and subsistence 1,160,000
Other general expenses 4,028,000
Less Appropriation in Aid 6,082,000
Net Estimates cost for 1975–76 34,634,000
