Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many civil servants are employed in his Department; what is the total cost of running the Department for the latest year for which figures are available; and if he will itemise the main constituent costs.

30,729 civil servants, including industrials, were employed in the Home Office on 1st April 1975.

The estimates of staff salaries, etc., for 1975–76 are as follows:

Salaries and wages 130,670,000
Travelling and subsistence 3,938,000
Other general expenses 5,079,000
Less Appropriations in Aid 2,792,000
Net Estimates cost for 1975–76 136,895,000
