§ Mr. Moateasked the Secretary of State for Employment what representations he has received about the construction of a sheltered workshop in the Medway health district; what is the Government's policy in connection with the construction of new workshops of this kind; what funds are available for this purpose; and what priority the Government attach to these facilities.
§ Mr. Harold WalkerThe main representations received on this matter have been from the Chatham and District Disablement Advisory Committee, the Association of Kent Societies for Mentally Handicapped Children and the Medway District Community Health Council. My Department's policy is to support the expansion of sheltered employment facilities where the need has been demonstrated, where the project is viable, and where the resources are available. Remploy's building programme is entirely financed by my Department. In the case of voluntary body or local authority workshops my Department normally contributes up to 75 per cent. of approved capital costs. The priority given to the construction of sheltered factories and workshops depends upon the circumstances of the case and upon the competing claims for public funds.
