§ Mr. Sillarsasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his estimate of the number of persons directly and indirectly employed through the Scottish fishing industry.
§ Mr. William RossAt December 1973 there were 8,311 full-time and 1,336 part-time sea fishermen in Scotland. Approximately 20,000 people were employed in Scotland in management, marketing, processing, chandling, net making, boat building and repairing and other occupations dependent on the fishing industry. In addition, the Scottish catch provides jobs in retailing and frying throughout Great Britain, but the mixed nature of these businesses prevents an accurate estimate of the numbers employed.
