§ 22. Miss Fookes
asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many licences have been issued for the export of live animals for slaughter since 16th January; how many animals have been sent; and what steps have been taken to ensure their well-being during the journey and at the point of slaughter.
§ Mr. Peart
Export licences are issued by the Department of Trade, which does not normally disclose details. Up to 14th February 6,478 live food animals were examined before shipment, all to EEC countries. Their well-being whilst in the United Kingdom and at sea was protected by our own welfare regulations, and on arrival overseas by the national laws of the countries concerned and by the450W European Convention for the Protection of Animals in International Transport.
