Mr. David Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many square feet of office space were rented or owned by Government Departments in London in April 1974 and how many in September 1975; how many civil servants have been moved out of London during the past 12 months; and how many square feet of extra office space are occupied by civil servants out of London.

but the estimated position is as follows: In April 1974 about 18.4 million sq. ft. of office space were rented or owned by Government Departments in London. In September 1975 the equivalent figure was about 18.9 million sq. ft. Some 1,450 Civil Service posts were moved out of London in the 12 months ending September 1975.

The extra office space occupied by civil servants in the United Kingdom outside London during the 12 months ending September 1975 was about 2 million sq. ft.
