§ Mrs. Jegerasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what progress has been made in the negotiations for the purchase of the site for the British Library.
§ Mr. Hugh JenkinsAs I announced on 5th August, negotiations have been opened with the National Freight Corporation and the British Rail Board for the purchase of a site owned by them in the Euston Road to accommodate the new British Library building. This will provide a more satisfactory and economical solution than the site previously contemplated in Bloomsbury. Negotiations are well under way, and site notices have been displayed, and a Press advertisement is to be issued in accordance with the principles of Section 26 of the Town and Country Planning Act 351W 1971, as a preliminary to the consultation procedure that my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment will have with Camden Borough Council, as the local planning authority.
