§ Mr. Newensasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what machinery exists to ensure that decisions taken on transport policy do not conflict with the policy of conserving energy.
§ Dr. GilbertThere is close liaison between this Department and the Department of Energy on all topics which are common to transport and energy conservation policy, both by personal contact between officials and through interdepartmental committees. Energy is, however, only one of the many resources involved in transport, and our aim must be to make the best use of all these resources. Accordingly, in appraisal of the effectiveness of different forms of transport, energy consumption is only one of a number of considerations which have to be taken into account.
