§ Mr. William Clarkasked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many pensionable persons were employed by local authorities on 30th September 1964; 454W and how many were employed on 30th September 1975 or on the latest date for which figures are available.
§ Mr. OakesThe best estimate possible in default of full statistical returns is that the local government superannuation scheme aplied to about 600,000 employees in September 1964 and about 900,000 employees in September 1975. These figures include a substantial number of non-local authority employees, for instance, staff of water authorities and new towns, but exclude teachers, firemen and police, who are subject to separate schemes.
