HC Deb 05 December 1975 vol 901 cc460-1W
Mr. Stephen Ross

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) if he plans to produce any legislation to ban, or limit the use of aerosol sprays;

(2) what Government sponsored research has been undertaken to assess the effects of fluocarbons in aerosol sprays on the ozone layer of the atmosphere; and what conclusions have so far been reached.

Mr. Denis Howell

We are appraising available information on the effects of chlorofluorcarbons, which are the main propellants used in aerosols, and intend to publish a report on the matter. We have commissioned research at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell and are also considering further research that needs to be done to assess the problem fully. The case for further action, such as a possible ban, will be considered in the light of the appraisal.
