HC Deb 07 August 1975 vol 897 cc488-9W
Mr. Atkinson

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list in the most convenient form and grouped in accordance with the Standard Industrial Classification 1968 the number of employees in employment within the Greater London Council area for the years 1966, 1970 and the latest available figures.

Mr. John Fraser

Estimates of the numbers of employees in employment in Greater London are made for each midyear and the most recent are for June 1974. During the period there have been some discontinuities in the series of estimates. A revised edition of the Standard Industrial Classification was introduced in 1969 along with some changes in procedure. The new annual censuses of employment were introduced in 1971. There are thus two sets of figures for each of the years 1969 and 1971. Following is the information

Notes:
Orders of the 1968 edition of the Standard Industrial Classification are not strictly comparable with orders of the 1958 edition.
In 1969 more extensive information was obtained about the location of employees in the distributive trades. In particular, steps were taken to allocate those whose National Insurance cards were exchanged centrally to the region where they actually worked. Figures for June 1969(b) onwards incorporate these revisions, but not those for June 1969(a) and previous years.
The estimates for June 1971(a) and earlier dates are based on counts of National Insurance Cards. Those for June 1971(b) and June 1974 are from the annual census of employment.
