HC Deb 30 April 1975 vol 891 cc145-6W
Mr. Hordern

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the net contribution per head to the balance of trade in 1974 of all those employed in the engineering sector, and all those employed in the insurance, banking, finance and business services.

Mr. Deakins

I have been asked to reply.

Exports of the engineering sector less the direct and indirect imports required to produce them are estimated provisionally to have averaged £2,200 per head in 1974. It is regretted that comparable estimates cannot be provided for the services sector mentioned since invisible exports and imports are not comprehensively classified by industrial sectors to correspond with the employment statistics, nor is a suitable input-output analysis available for assessing net contributions.
