asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will publish in the Official Report the value of supplementary benefit payments as a percentage of average earnings for each year since 1948; and if she will give the information for a single person, a married couple without children, a married couple with two children and a married couple with four children.

I regret that it is not possible to provide this information for the years 1948 to 1953. The following table gives estimated percentages for each year from 1954 to 1973, the latest year for which figures are available.

The following table sets out the value of flat-rate unemployment benefit and sickness benefit expressed as a percentage of net average earnings—that is, the average earnings of male, adult, full-time manual workers —in manufacturing and certain other industries as determined by the Department of Employment's regular October inquiry, less tax and national insurance contributions.
