HC Deb 25 November 1974 vol 882 cc17-8W
Mr. William Clark

asked the Secretary of State for Industry whether, in view of the pending rise in taxi fares, he will authorise the introduction of digital meters in taxis instead of the present meters which are confusing as the amount recorded does not correspond to the actual fare due.

Dr. Summerskill

I have been asked to reply.

The existing law in both London and the provinces requires that taximeters should record the fare in monetary units. We are not convinced of the advantages of substituting digital meters, and have no plans to introduce such a change in London. In the provinces the matter is one for the local authorities under whose byelaws taximeters are required to be fitted.
