HC Deb 25 November 1974 vol 882 cc38-9W
Mr. Gould

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what would be the cost of raising the maximum grant payable to a married woman student to the same level as in the case of married men students.

Mr. Prentice

Married women students not living at home with their husbands receive the same standard rates of grant as married men. The additional cost of paying all married women at these rates would be about £2 million per annum.

Mr. Gould

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what would be the cost of abolishing the means-tested contribution to married students' grants which is at present paid by their spouses.

Mr. Prentice

The cost for both undergraduates and postgraduates is estimated at about £1.3 million in the current academic year.
