HC Deb 20 November 1974 vol 881 c418W
Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will abolish the post of religious instructor in schools.

Mr. William Ross

The extent to which religious instruction is provided in schools is a matter for education authorities to determine in accordance with the provisions of Section 8 of the Education (Scotland) Act 1962. I am considering the recommendations of the Committee on Moral and Religious Education in Scottish Schools which, among other things, recommended the introduction of a specialist teaching qualification in religious education.
