asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proportion of families pay less than 85p per week income tax.

I regret that information is not available for families. For taxpayers, counting husband and wife as one, it is estimated that for 1974–75 about 10 per cent. of those with incomes above £625, the effective tax exemption limit for a single person, will pay less than £44—the annual equivalent of 85p per week—in tax.
