HC Deb 14 November 1974 vol 881 cc208-9W
Mr. Bowden

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many people in the United Kingdom are consuming water from the public water supply system where the content of natural fluoride equals or exceeds one part per million.

Dr. Owen

The report on the Conduct of Fluoridation Studies 1962—No. 105 in the series of Reports on Public Health and Medical Subjects—quoted a World Health Organisation estimate of about 500,000 people in England. The number tends to fluctuate with changes in water supply arrangements.

Mr. Bowden

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will provide the Library with the names of areas in the United Kingdom where artificial fluoridation is now in operation and ensure the information is kept up to date.

Dr. Owen

A list of areas in England where the water supply is fluoridated in whole or in part is being prepared so as to take account of boundary changes caused by health service and local government reorganisation. As soon as it is ready, a copy will be placed in the Library and kept up to date.

Mr. Bowden

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will specify the statutory provisions under which power exists to introduce fluoride into the public water supply.

Dr. Owen

I would refer the hon. Member to my reply to him on 12th November.— [Vol. 881, c.60].
