HL Deb 13 November 1974 vol 354 cc861-2WA
LORD HALE

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What was the estimated total number of premises to be designated in Section 1, subsection (2) of the Fire Precautions Act 1971 and what is the total number which have been (a) designated, (b) fully inspected and (c) been granted a fire certificate.

LORD HALE further

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the approximate number of premises in Great Britain which at the most convenient recent date for computation have received notices requiring further precautions under the provisions of the Fire Precautions Act 1971 and have not so far as is known fully complied.

LORD HARRIS OF GREENWICH

In 1970 it was estimated that some 370,000 premises in England, Wales and Scotland were within the scope of Section 1(2) of the Act. Hotels and boarding houses (excluding very small premises) were designated under the Act on June 1, 1972. On December 31, 1973, the most recent date for which information is available, fire authorities had received applications in respect of 51,274 premises. Of these, 11,568 had been inspected and 592 certificates had been issued. It may be assumed that further work will have been necessary in the majority of the other 10,976 cases.
