HC Deb 04 November 1974 vol 880 cc87-90W
Mr. Ron Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will list the total number of motor invalid tricycles with manually operated gearbox, motor invalid tricycles with automatic transmission, electrically propelled invalid tricycles and four-wheeled cars or travellors, respectively, which were on issue in England as at 30th September 1973 and 1974, respectively.

Mr. Alfred Morris

Following are the figures:

1973 1974
Three-wheelers with manual gearchange 13,056 11,863
Three-wheelers with automatic transmission 4,444 6,552
Electric three-wheelers 1,774 1,715
Cars 8,133 9,261
These figures exclude reserve fleets of about 2,000 three-wheelers with manual gearchange and about 300 electric three-wheelers.

Mr. Ron Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will list the total number of motor invalid tricycles with manually operated gearbox, motor invalid tricycles with automatic transmission, electrically propelled invalid tricycles and four-wheeled cars or travellors, respectively, which were involved in accidents in England as at 30th September 1973 and 1974, respectively.

Mr. Alfred Morris

The figures are as follows:

1973 1974
Three-wheelers with manual gearchange 3,091 2,315
Three-wheelers with automatic transmission 1,563 2,502
Electric three-wheelers 260 213
Cars 1,577 1,820

My hon. Friend may wish to note that a substantial proportion of these—particularly in respect of three-wheelers—did not involve collisions with other vehicles on the road.

Mr. Ron Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will list the total number of drivers of motor invalid tricycles with manually operated gearbox, motor invalid tricycles with automatic transmission, electrically propelled invalid tricycles and four-wheeled cars or travellors, respectively, who were actually injured in accidents in England as at 30th September 1973 and 1974, respectively.

Mr. Alfred Morris

The number of incidents in which injuries were sustained by drivers of these vehicles were as follows:

1973 1974
Three-wheelers with manual gearchange 362 419
Three-wheelers with automatic transmission
Electric three-wheelers
Cars 72 94

These injuries were mostly of a minor nature.

Mr. Ron Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will list the total number of motor invalid tricycles with manually operated gearbox, motor invalid tricycles with automatic transmission, electrically propelled invalid tricycles and four-wheeled car or travellors, respectively which were involved in accidents in which they overturned or were blown over in England as at 30th September 1973 and 1974, to the nearest available month, respectively.

Mr. Alfred Morris

The figures are as follows:

1973 1974
Three-wheelers with manual gearchange 103 105
Three-wheelers with automatic transmission 95 175
Electric three-wheelers 2 3
Cars 6 4

My hon. Friend will have noted from my earlier reply to him today that in the case of three-wheelers with automatic transmission, the fleet increased in size from 4,444 at 30th September 1973 to 6,552 at 30th September 1974.

Mr. Alfred Morris

Figures for 1973 are not available. Such statistics are now kept, and the numbers of incidents in 1974 in which injuries were sustained by drivers of these vehicles are as follows:

Three-wheelers with manual gearchange 102
Three-wheelers with automatic transmission
Electric three-wheelers
Cars 1

Most of these injuries were of a minor nature.

Mr. Ron Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will list the total number of drivers of motor invalid tricycles with manually operated gearbox, motor invalid tricycles with automatic transmission, electrically propelled invalid tricycles and four-wheeled cars or travellers, respectively, who were actually injured in accidents in which their vehicles were in collision with another vehicle, pedestrian or immovable object in England as at 30th September 1973 and 1974, to the nearest available month, respectively.

Mr. Alfred Morris

The numbers of drivers who died whilst driving a Department vehicle were as follows:

1973 1974
Three-wheelers with manual gearchange 2 4
Three-wheelers with automatic transmission 3 0
Electric three-wheelers 0 0

In some instances it is not known whether the death resulted from the accident or was the cause of it.
