Mr. Wigley

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what approaches he has received from oil companies proposing to use Nant Gwytheyrn in Gwynedd as a base for Celtic Sea oil development purposes; what approaches he has received concerning land acquisition for purposes allied to Celtic Sea oil development in other parts of the Lleyn Peninsula; and if he will make a statement.

My right hon. and learned Friend has had no such approaches.

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what discussions he has had with Welsh local authorities which border the Irish Sea and the Bristol Channel concerning the prospecting for oil and natural gas; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Rowlands

The Welsh Office has held a series of discussions with local authorities in the past two years. These contacts will be developed and extended.
