HC Deb 23 May 1974 vol 874 cc265-6W
Mr. Michael Latham

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what sum has been allocated under the Rate Support Grant Order to the Leicestershire County Council in 1974–75 for education purposes; and what part of that figure, expressed both in monetary and percentage terms, is represented by his Department's contribution to the cost of teachers' salaries.

Mr. Oakes

The rate support grant is a general grant in aid of rate fund services. It is not allocated to specific services.

Mr. Michael Latham

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the grant payable under each of the elements of the Rate Support Grant Order 1974 to (a) the Melton Borough Council and (b) the Charlwood Borough Council in 1974–75, and what were the equivalent figures for 1973–74 for the local authorities which previously existed in those areas.

Mr. Oakes

The latest estimates of rate support grant are:

Domestic element Resources element Total RSG
£ £ £
Melton:
1973–74 160,000 100,000 260,000
1974–75 345,000 695,000 1,040,000
Charnwood:
1973–74 540,000 140,000 680,000
1974–75 1,180,000 1,900,000 3,080,000

The grants shown for Melton DC in 1973–74 are the totals of those for Melton Mow bray UDC and Melton and Belvoir RDC, and for Charnwood they are the totals for Loughborough BC, Shepshed UDC and Barrow upon Soar RDC. The rates levied will of course also be affected by the amount of rate support grant payable to Leicestershire County Council.
