HC Deb 20 May 1974 vol 874 c54W
Sir G. Sinclair

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many deaths from whooping cough among children under 1 year old occurred in the United Kingdom in each of the last 10 years; and how many cases of cerebral disease associated with vaccination for whooping cough have occurred in the same period.

Dr. Owen

The numbers of deaths from whooping cough among children under one year of age in the United Kingdom were as follows:

1964 35
1965 17
1966 26
1967 41
1968 20
1969 8
1970 19
1971 26
1972 2
1973 Provisional 2

I regret that it is not possible to make an estimate of the incidence of cerebral disease associated with vaccination for whooping cough on the basis of the information currently available. I am examining the possibility of undertaking studies to ascertain the incidence of complications.
