asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many 4-year-old children attend nursery schools run by local authorities in England and Wales; and what proportion of the total number of 4-year-old children this figure represents.

In January 1973, the latest date for which information is available, 19,104 children aged 4–2.4 per cent. of the age group—were attending maintained nursery schools either full-time or part-time. In addition, 317,156 children aged 4–40.8 per cent. of the age group—were attending maintained primary schools either full-time or part-time
