HC Deb 03 May 1974 vol 872 c262W
Mr. Viggers

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will permit an increase of fares to taxicab operators not currently registered for value added tax to be backdated to take account of the incidence of value added tax from the date of its commencement.

Dr. Summerskill

It will be for district councils, by which taxi fares outside London are fixed, to take account of the factors mentioned.

Mr. Viggers

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the currently permitted charge per mile for taxis licensed to ply for hire in Gosport.

Dr. Summerskill

15p for the first three-quarters of a mile, then 12p per mile.

Mr. Viggers

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the currently permitted charge per mile for taxis licensed to ply for hire in Fareham.

Dr. Summerskill

22p for the first mile and one-sixth, then 18p per mile.

Mr. Viggers

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether a taxi licensed to ply for hire in Gosport may ply for hire in Fareham and vice versa; and if not, why not.

Dr. Summerskill

No, unless they are licensed by both the district councils concerned. A taxi must be licensed by the council of a district in which it wishes to ply for hire.
